The landscape represents a right, and it is fundamental to recognise our responsibility to protect it.

Status & Application:
LALI is active in 19 different countries.

URBAN MENUS Analysis

Characterization along 5 societal goals: Happiness, Safety, Innovation, Profitability, and Circularity.

The graph below shows for which of these themes the product is mainly relevant on a societal level. Some products are more specialized, while others may be covering all topics equally. The results are based on a self-evaluation questionnaire that was developed by URBAN MENUS and filled in by the products or services themselves.

Profitability

Profitability is not a main focus of the initiative.

Innovation

The LALI initiative fosters solidarity, partnerships, and coexistence to facilitate comprehensive change for the benefit of urban and regional development. The initiative provides a platform that enables different actors to collaborate, learn from each other, and find innovative solutions.

Circularity

LALI aims to offer answers to various urban “urgencies,” such as the fight against climate change, the progress of the circular economy, the implementation of the Urban Agenda and the SDGs, sustainable mobility and the multiple needs for living in more human, cohesive, and greener cities.

the light we need

www.lixtec.com

Thanks to dynamic light control, lixtec always provides standard-compliant lighting when it is needed. If a street is empty, the light is dimmed down to a lower level. As soon as moving people or vehicles are detected, the light is dimmed up.

With lixtecs’ radar-based sensor solutions, any modern LED street light can be transformed into a dynamic street light. lixtecs’ solutions offer energy savings without loss of comfort, provide a significant reduction in light pollution and CO₂ emissions, and therefore contribute to achieving climate targets.

Status & Application:
Ready-for-market; lixtec is already in use in several European countries.

Happiness

The reduction of light pollution can have a positive effect on people’s well-being and health – Flora and fauna also benefit, leading to increased biodiversity in the area.

Safety

The subjective feeling of safety can be increased by innovative detection and communication systems (compared to autonomously switching luminaires with motion detectors) because the area in the direction of movement of the person is already illuminated before they enter or drive through it.

Profitability

The product can lead to long-term cost savings for operators of public lighting systems, due to large reductions in energy use (60-80%).

Innovation

With the advancing technological development in the field of lighting control, dynamic street lighting can play a significant role in achieving smart city goals. Other aspects of innovation in a city (such as promotion of creativity, fostering education etc.) are not covered, however, as this is not the focus of the product.

Circularity

The product can contribute to a large reduction in energy demand, therefore helping to achieve our climate goals. Furthermore, light pollution is reduced, positively affecting humans and wildlife alike.

a new way of delivery

www.remihub.at

RemiHub is investigating whether and how public spaces can be used as city hubs for sustainable parcel logistics.

Steadily increasing online retailing, rising order frequency, smaller shipment sizes, and customer wishes such as fast delivery times are leading to an ever-increasing number of parcel transport in cities.

The goal of RemiHub is to keep the “last-mile” of parcel delivery from the transshipment point to people’s homes as short as possible. Therefore, RemiHub relies on the temporary shared use of public transport spaces, as these areas are excellently connected to the transport network and are also usually located in the middle of the city. The delivery is based on electric vehicles, focusing on electric bicycles.

Status & Application:
Ready-for-market; There are several pilot projects in Vienna, Austria.

Safety

The most important contribution of remiHub to this theme is road safety,  with a lower volume of traffic leading to a lower frequency of accidents.  This in turn can increase the general feeling of safety in a city.

Profitability

RemiHub’s concept can lead to reduced economic costs in several sectors: Lower number of accidents, less congestion, reduced climate impact, increase in urban quality of life, employment effects (such as reduction of precarity in parcel logistics).

Innovation

Innovation can be promoted through multiple uses of inner-city space and new cooperation models between key urban players.

Circularity

Circularity is promoted by the use of electric vehicles (mainly bicycles), and the overall reduced amount of delivery traffic due to shorter delivery routes.
